Past Perfect Continuos Tense

Past Perfect Continuous Tense:

Past Perfect Continuous Tense expresses an action that began before a specific time in the past and continued till that time.

Examples:

  • When Sam joined the company last year, his friend had already been working there for three years.
  • He was a great player. Overall he had written sixteen plays and in fact he had been writing since he was 24.
  • Past Perfect Continuous Tense : - The past perfect continuous is used -

    (A)  To denote that an action that began before  particular moment in the past and was still taking place, or had just finished, at that moment when another action took place. For example,

  • When I visited Gwalior, he had been teaching there for a year.
  • I had been driving for an hour when I heard a sound in the gear box.
  • (B)  To talk about repeated actions in the past. For example,

  • She had been trying to fix this all day.
